Salt and Honey, Yum
Good morning and Happy Monday,
This week I am really intrigued about something I saw on twitter from one of those holistic health accounts. Those seem to be taking up a lot of my feed these days. Anyway, it is the idea that having a spoonful of honey with salt on top of it helps you fall asleep quicker and stay asleep throughout the night. Bonus points if it is raw, local honey, as that is better for you. Sorry to the plastic bear bottles of honey but you’re just not cutting it anymore. ☹ As for the salt, they say that pink Himalayan salt is better for you than average store sea salt that people normally think of. This has something to do with magnesium, iron, and other mineral contents as well as contamination from other things.
This idea reminds me of what my priest growing up one time said in his homily about how to rid the hiccups; Eat a spoonful of sugar. I never did look up to see if that actually cures them, but there’s no way right. Right? Anyway, the salt and honey sleep concoction is actually rooted in science, apparently the sugar from the honey allows your body to release a chemical called tryptophan more easily which helps induce sleepiness. Additionally, the natural sugar also completes your liver glycogen stores, which can help with waking up during the night. As for the salt, as I stated before, the minerals in the salt like magnesium help your body to wind down. Additionally, the salt helps to calm down your parasympathetic nervous system, which in turn helps your body calm down. The combination also surprisingly, tastes delicious.
If this works it will get an automatic 10/10 from me. Here is a link to a website that explains it in a little more in-depth scientific terms than I do. How to Improve Your Sleep By Combining Salt and Honey (healthyandnaturalworld.com)
